Hernando Elementray School is the only school in our district (and neighboring districts) that has a nine hole disc golf course on its campus. Our disc golf course is a challenging course that will test your ability to throw both accurately and for distance. We are now in the process of creating signs that will provide information on the number of the hole, location of the hole, and par score.
Mr. Glenny, a fifth grade teacher and "resident disc golf pro", hosts a one day a week program teaching the skills and scoring needed to play disc golf. The program is after school on Monday afternoon. There is no charge for the program and we encourage all of the kids in grades 2-5 to participate in this fun, exciting activity.
During our physical education classes, Mrs. Buettner and Mr. Porcelli use the course during our disc golf unit integrating math, mapping, and strategic game skills. All of the students in grades k-5 get to experience the game during our disc golf unit. Disc golf is a fun game that incorporates throwing skills and fitness with walking from hole to hole. Presently, we're the only school with a disc golf course but Whispering Pines Park and Floral City Park have eighteen hole disc golf courses for public use.
